The plastering of walls is in most cases the final step towards finalising a room. Plaster coats can be applied to new (e.g. plaster board) and old surfaces (e.g. pre-existing walls of render or older plaster-work) to create a uniform and sharp finish. Additional application of angle beads and edging strips to walls and openings before plastering is used to create sharp clean lines.
Concrete rendering has many applications as it sets hard and can be made impervious to moisture; traditionally used internally and externally to coat rough brick and block-work before either plastering or painting. Used less today for internal walls, rendering is still the external finish of choice, often applied in conjunction with brickwork and timber/boarded finishes.
An innovation of the 1990’s, the fast application of dry lining has made it the finish of choice for many building contractors. Plaster/dry-line boards can be fixed in a number of ways (e.g. dot & dab or tacking) to existing surfaces (e.g. brick or render) and then taped, filled and sanded to create a paintable finish.
Plastering is one of the most ancient building trades still in use today. It is the plasterer’s role to provide the final finish to walls and ceilings before decoration. Internal finishes can range from traditional gypsum plaster to stippled and patterned finishes such as Artex. Externally, harder and more weather resistant render finishes are normally applied.
In recent decades internal work has been expanded to include dry lining and dot & dab.
